Bio:
Formed in 1974 in Jacksonville, Florida, 38 Special is a Southern rock staple that evolved into arena rock icons with hits that still echo through stadiums. Founded by Donnie Van Zant (Ronnie Van Zant’s brother from Lynyrd Skynyrd) and Don Barnes, the band started with a raw Southern edge on their self-titled debut in 1977, but broke big in the 1980s with albums like Wild-Eyed Southern Boys (1981) and Special Forces (1982). Tracks like “Hold On Loosely,” “Caught Up in You,” and “Rockin’ into the Night” topped charts and defined their blend of gritty guitars and melodic hooks. After lineup shifts, including Donnie’s 2013 retirement for health reasons, Don Barnes has kept the flame alive. Their first album in 20 years, Milestone (2025), features collabs with Pat Monahan of Train and Jim Peterik of Survivor, dropping the single “All I Haven’t Said.” With over 100 shows a year and streams on Spotify and Apple Music, 38 Special embodies the road warrior life, carrying Jacksonville’s soulful rock spirit forward.
