Destin Choice Route, known as JID, was born on October 31, 1990, in East Atlanta’s Zone 6, Georgia. The youngest of seven, he got his stage name from his grandmother’s nickname for his “jittery” childhood energy. Raised on funk, soul, and ‘90s hip-hop, JID’s music blends intricate lyricism with Southern trap and neo-soul vibes. A football star at Stephenson High School, he attended Hampton University on a scholarship but was expelled for skipping practices to focus on music. He co-founded Spillage Village in 2010 with EarthGang and others, dropping early mixtapes like CakeWalk (2010) and Route of Evil (2012). His 2015 EP DiCaprio led to a Dreamville Records deal in 2016. His debut album, The Never Story (2017), featured “Never,” followed by the critically acclaimed DiCaprio 2 (2018) with “151 Rum” and “Off Deez.” His 2022 album The Forever Story earned a Grammy nod, with hits like “Surround Sound.” Part of Zoink Gang, JID’s 2025 EP GDLU (Preluxe) and upcoming album God Does Like Ugly cement his status as a lyrical powerhouse in Southern hip-hop.
