Formed in 2010 by producer Key Kobayashi (Kobametal) under Amuse Inc. in Tokyo, BABYMETAL is a Japanese trio that blends J-pop idol aesthetics with heavy metal, creating the “kawaii metal” genre. Starting as a sub-unit of Sakura Gakuin, the group—originally Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-metal), Moa Kikuchi (Moametal), and Yui Mizuno (Yuimetal)—dropped their debut single “Doki Doki ☆ Morning” in 2011. Their 2014 album BABYMETAL, with “Gimme Chocolate!!,” went viral, leading to global fame. After Yuimetal’s 2018 departure, Momoko Okazaki (Momometal) joined in 2023. Backed by the Kami Band, their live shows are a theatrical blend of choreography and metal riffs. Albums like Metal Resistance (2016), Metal Galaxy (2019), and The Other One (2023) charted worldwide, with Metal Galaxy hitting #13 on the Billboard 200. Collaborations with Judas Priest’s Rob Halford and tours with Metallica cement their metal cred. Despite early gatekeeping, BABYMETAL’s 2023-2024 world tour and 2025 Glastonbury return prove their unstoppable fusion of cute and chaos.
