Bio:
Born in the sleepy town of Ukiah, California, in 1991, AFI (A Fire Inside) started as a scrappy hardcore punk outfit, a bunch of high school kids—Davey Havok, Adam Carson, Mark Stopholese, and Vic Chalker—chasing the raw, chaotic energy of their punk idols. What began with sloppy riffs and youthful rebellion has morphed over three decades into a genre-defying force, blending the gritty snarl of punk with the dark, theatrical pulse of gothic rock and the raw ache of emo. Since 1998, the lineup of Havok’s haunting vocals, Carson’s relentless drums, Hunter Burgan’s driving bass, and Jade Puget’s intricate guitar work has crafted a sound that’s as restless as their fans’ hearts. From the underground buzz of The Art of Drowning (2000) to the mainstream breakthrough of Sing the Sorrow (2003) with hits like “Girl’s Not Grey,” and the chart-topping Decemberunderground (2006) with “Miss Murder,” AFI’s music weaves despair and defiance into anthems that feel like late-night confessions. Their 2021 album Bodies and the upcoming Silver Bleeds the Black Sun (set for October 3, 2025) prove they’re still evolving, still burning bright. With a fanbase called the Despair Faction inking their devotion in tattoos, AFI’s live shows—ranked among Revolver’s best—turn venues into cathartic rituals. From Ukiah’s small stages to global arenas, they’ve built a legacy that’s as much about emotional honesty as it is about sonic rebellion.
